Where Have You Gone Bo Dimaggio?

I recently came across a blog that I had written around the time the Obamas were getting their puppy, Bo. ( https://ironicman.wordpress.com/2009/04/15/a-dog-day-afternoon/)  I have to say, even by my rigorous standards, the posting has a certain charm to it, both in style and in substance.  It harkens back to a time when it seemed we (the country) were in a  much more hopeful mood.  It’s almost as if I was writing about a long ago period when the world was a kinder, gentler place.  A delusion.  It hasn’t even been fifteen months since that story was in the  headlines and so much has happened since then, almost none of it good.

We’ve had the venality of the health care debate.  The rise of the Tea Party movement.  The continuing recession and unemployment, with no end in sight   The loss of the 60th Democratic Senate seat from Massachusetts.  The fouling of the environment resulting from the BP disaster.  And then, of course, there’s this damn sinus infection that I can’t seem to shake.

It’s a thousand degrees outside; Jon Stewart is getting repetitive and Stephen Colbert seems to be trying a bit too hard.  And from what I read, no one is watching Leno or Letterman anymore.  There seems to be no respite from the seriousness of  world events.   So, I  think it may be time to re-introduce Bo to the country.    This time, repackaged as a bi-partisan dog that  Americans of all stripes can rally around.  Maybe he’ll even become the  “Uniter” that his owner’s predecessor promised to be.   Wouldn’t that be something!?  God… I just hope he doesn’t lick himself in public too often (the dog, not the predecessor).
