Random Judaica

A few weeks ago the NY Times published the  obituary of  a woman named Janet Jagan who at one time had been the president of Guayana. She had been the first woman president of  that country.  What really caught my eye was that she was originally from Chicago and Jewish.  Born Janet Rosenberg.

The story of how she came to be president is a little convoluted, but it started with her going against her parents wishes and marrying a non-jew who was going to dental school at Northwestern.  (At least he was a professional.)   I thought that was an amazing turn of a life.

Yesterday, I came across an interesting statistic:   Of the 203  Republican members of  the US  House of Representatives only one is  Jewish, Eric Cantor (imagine the problem HE has in forming a minyan)   Or put another way….as many Jewish women have been president of a South American country as there are  Republican Jewish congressmen/women.

It makes one wonder….no?
